Don't tell it on the mountain

Monday Musings for November 28, 2016

Good morning, Musers,

I have a devotional thought today. And since we're sneaking up on Christmas, I'm using the theme Go Tell it on the Mountain... sort of... because what do we do with people who go and tell the wrong thing on the mountain?... and there's plenty of that!

Many of you know Jesus' chilling teaching about discipleship — how "many" people who claim him as Lord do so falsely.... and even do "many miracles" in his name... yet he disavows them, calls them evildoers and tells them to go away.

Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’ (Matthew 7:21–23, NIV)

I would be guilty of an understatement to say there's a warning here: Know the true Christ or perish after wasting a lot of time. But there's also a lesson here: the name of Jesus is not in itself magic. You must name the right Jesus to obtain the right effect... which is eternal life with him and meaningful service on the earth.

Do you think any prosperity preacher is telling-on-the-mountain the correct picture of Jesus that was born on Christmas morn? Nope... and it doesn't have to be that blatant. Even we more biblical types have false ideas about Jesus. It's easier than we think... and that's today's message: nobody "gets' Jesus... nobody!... not end to end, not through and through.
