Gathering at the door

Monday Musings for December 26, 2016

Good morning, Musers... and Merry Christmas!

In today’s devotional, I’ll be offering an idea to help launch the New Year: Go and hang-out where Jesus lives! Easy said? Well, easy done, too… just make sure that you are at the right house. You see, Jesus was a hot new thing back in the day — and so much so that he had to dampen down the excitement.

Then Jesus said to [the healed Leper], “See that you don’t tell anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest and offer the gift Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.” (Matthew 8:4, NIV)

Why did he command this man not to spread the word? Because the people would have made him the wrong kind of king at the wrong moment. Remember, no one really “got” Jesus while he was here on earth. They wanted the glorious part of the Messianic kingdom right then — and Jesus did not want to throw gas on that fire — but I still think it was cool that the whole city was gathering at his door.

Now, the people had the right person and the right idea… just not the right details. The whole city — nay, the whole world — had more to learn about the suffering Messiah — their Savior… and the religious leaders were little help there… except to help with the practicable parts of his suffering.

We have the advantage of being a more educated populace. We know the story of the suffering Savior by virtue of having a completed Scripture. Furthermore, we purport to gather at his door. But still… is it the right door? That will always be the question.

I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture.
(John 10:9, ESV)

You see, Jesus himself is the door. He is himself the gateway to the fold — and you cannot get into the Father’s pasture without following the Holy Spirit’s leading to go through the Son… and that’s the “trick” of salvation (and of the Christian life well-lived); gathering at Jesus is gathering at the door… and if the biblically revealed Jesus is not at your particular door, then you are at the wrong door.

Muslims, Mormons, Jehovah’s Witnesses… they have a God that sounds like our God… but they are all at the wrong door. They all acknowledge Jesus somewhat… but there are no “points” for coming close. In fact, that kind of near-miss is really the largest possible error — an eternal error. But instead of a near-miss, what about the far-miss — like that of the materialist-atheist who will not even consider anything that can’t be sensed and measured? Well… there is nothing greater one can lose than eternity — so, great or small, the penalty is the same.

What I’d like to know is, what do those materialist-atheists do when the latest scientific measurements and analysis point to a non-material transcendent agent as Creator of the universe? I ask because this implies purpose — and that’s where the newest science is pointing, causing no small disquiet in their ranks.

I hate it that people miss Jesus — gathering at the wrong door for any reason and by any measure. But these are great days to be a believer! Spread the word and enjoy the musing.
