Does Science teach that gender and sex are the same?

Monday Musings for August 02, 2021

Good morning, Musers,

Mainsail Ministries answers questions about God, the Bible and the Christian culture — and I’m glad I made its scope so broad! Sure, people have a lot of questions about the Bible. But they don’t have to “deal” with the Bible every day; they have to deal with the world. This is why I try to “stay informed.” I like to weigh in on secular topics that can affect Christian lives.

That being said, keeping up with what’s happening in the world can be exhausting, heartbreaking — and when you think about it — impossible. But not everyone is like me. Many believers have no interest in apologetics or continually tweaking their worldviews. For these, “keeping up” is not necessary. I encourage them to rest in God and enjoy their Christian lives.

I rest in God too… but the way I’m made, I can’t opt-out of wrestling with ideas. Some of my earliest memories involve me trying to make sense of life. I did not pursue philosophy professionally. (Indeed — I have no CV at all!) But I’m wired to chase my version of the TOE (Theory of Everything)… so I won’t rest until every thought exists without tension.

Sciences’ version of the TOE does not involve metaphysics, but mine does. I want to know how everything works together. This means that I consider all the data of science, but also that of metaphysics. This includes the spiritual metaphysical disciplines like studying Scripture and natural theology. But also, traditional metaphysics like philosophy.

I know… I know. This is a big job! But relax. I’m on it.

I’m not deluded, though. There is little chance that I will do for the totality of knowledge what Einstein did for time and space. But as a Christian, I understand that God is more interested in our processes than he is in our results. This is good news! … because none of us will reach our full potential in Christ. But as long as we don’t abandon prayer, Bible study, fellowship and service, we will be progressing in the right direction.

Today’s earnest seeker was a young believer from Europe who asked me about science, not the Bible. His interests were godly. But I find his approach telling. The Bible is our primary weapon (Ephesians 6:17), and he wants to defend it. But instead of asking, “What does the Bible say about this?” he asked, “What does science say about this?” … and that’s okay.

You see, today’s young nonbelievers might not know that a book called the Bible even exists… or that the historical Jesus existed — any of that! So the question, “Does science corroborate the Bible?” is more important today than it has ever been.

I “get it” that the Bible is sufficient (2 Timothy 3:16) and that it has the power to cut to the heart and save souls. It also has answers for every issue of life! But it does not address every issue specifically. Even the Bible is limited in scope. But since I believe that all truth is God’s truth, I fear no data. How about you? … because we’re going to talk about gender today.
